We are committed to serving under-represented communities in the literary space. Our foundation is in helping new authors build their careers. Ladderbird is only accepting new clients from diverse backgrounds, especially BIPOC, disabled, LGBTQIA+, and all others who have been systemically excluded in literature.
At Ladderbird, we often get asked the origin of our name. Like all things we do here, it comes from a place of love, laughter, and the desire to uplift authors! When we decided to open the agency, we wanted to create a name that was memorable, but really spoke to our values. What better symbol could there be to show how stories can make the mind soar than a bird?
In the immortal words of Maya Angelou, “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.”
Then we thought about our role in the process of getting those stories out into the world. Our job as agents is to give authors that extra lift to start a bit higher than they could on their own. What device can be used to help you get higher? A ladder!
For decades, centuries really, some people have started from higher ground with easier access to getting their words into the hands of readers. At Ladderbird, we want to be a tool to help give rise to more equity, more access, and more voices reaching out to more audiences than history has ever embraced.
